Features

notes
A lush, evergreen shrub, the variegated foliage of Ilex altaclerensis Golden King is extremely handsome. Rather than prickles, the shiny leaves, with yellow margins, have attractive serrations making them easier to handle. Its inconspicuous spring flowers attract native pollinators and the foliage is a haven for garden birds. A recipient of the RHS AGM (Award of Garden Merit), for all round excellence in the garden.
Insights

This benign but robust holly is the result of breeding the native English Holly - Ilex aquifolium - with Ilex x altaclerensis. Symbolically seen as referring to Christ’s crown of thorns, prior to the 19th-century, Holly once played a much more important part in decorating family homes for festivity than the Christmas tree.
