When our chairman and founder Nigel Johnson was establishing the company during the 1980s and 1990s, he paid particular attention to employing young, disadvantaged and less able people from the community, following the socially conscious example set by his parents (his father was a policeman, his mother a care worker). Nigel derived great energy and satisfaction from building his teams this way and particularly valued how it forged a close relationship with the community. He went on to become a trustee, then chairman of Aspire, a dynamic Oxford-based charity and social enterprise, supporting and retraining homeless people. Now Burford Garden Co. is the main sponsor and supporter of Guideposts.
We have been delighted to help with the development of Guideposts’ Witney site. At the outset we contributed towards the draining and clearance of ditches to prevent flooding, and a team of our staff became involved in offering advice and assisting with planting the hedges that we provided.
We have also made donations towards building a new shower and toilet block on site as well as contributing towards buying tents and a barbecue used at Witney for respite camping and at a festival to promote the charity. We continue to offer horticultural guidance and support and supply seeds needed for planting schemes. We are excited to continue our association and join with Guideposts’ exciting plans for the future.
Guideposts relies on the kind donations and efforts of volunteers to ensure services continue to run in the local community. Every donation or hour spent helping can make a huge difference to transform the lives of so many.
