Elaeagnus ebbingei Gilt
- Pot size: 3L
- Height and Spread: 3m (9ft 8in) x 3m (9ft 8in) after 5-10 years
Originating in Asia, this wonderful shrub was carefully bred in the late 1920s in Holland. Surprisingly the fruit is edible, although highly astringent if not ripe enough to fall off the shrub. It is rare in being a source of fatty acids as well as Vitamin C and great claims have been made relating to its beneficial qualities.
Elaeagnus produces small, highly scented flowers in October, followed by decorative, edible red berries.
- Well drained moist, fertile soil
- All aspects
- Full sun, partial shade
This low-maintenance shrub needs little attention unless you are clipping it into a hedge. If you are in a cold area, protect it from harsh frosts because it has a shallow root system.
