Features

notes
The attractive variation to the evergreen foliage of Elaeagnus ebbingei would be enough to justify finding this shrub a sunny corner in the garden. In October, small, bell-like white flowers emerge, whose wonderful fragrance is enough to stop you in your tracks. Robust, low maintenance and beautifully scented, Oleaster also makes good screening or hedging.
Insights

Originating in Asia, this wonderful shrub was carefully bred in the late 1920s in Holland. Surprisingly the fruit is edible, although highly astringent if not ripe enough to fall off the shrub. It is rare in being a source of fatty acids as well as Vitamin C and great claims have been made relating to its beneficial qualities.

Details

Elaeagnus produces small, highly scented flowers in October, followed by decorative, edible red berries.

  • Well drained moist, fertile soil
  • All aspects
  • Full sun, partial shade
Care

This low-maintenance shrub needs little attention unless you are clipping it into a hedge. If you are in a cold area, protect it from harsh frosts because it has a shallow root system.

Scent

Highly scented flowers
