Features

notes

This evergreen climber bears fragrant, white flowers tinged with pink, like apple blossom, hence its name. These beautiful flowers open in early spring, emerging from deep pink buds, the flowers fading in colour to white. The leathery leaves are bronze when young before turning deep green.

Insights

This vigorous, twining climber will cloak a fence within a couple of seasons, so provide enough space for it to spread out. It is a recipient of the RHS AGM (Award of Garden Merit), for all round excellence.

Care
  • Clematis like full sun or partial shade and moist, but well-drained soil with their roots in the shade. For this, plant the crown 5-8cm (2-3in) beneath the soil, ideally shaded by other plants. Alternatively layer stones on the surface of the soil, which protects the roots from the sun and from drying out. Plant out of cold winds.
  • Pruning group 1 – does not require routine pruning, but, if required, do so after flowering.
