Commonly known as the Crimson Climber, Vitis Coignetiae Claret Cloak is a vigorous, deciduous climbing grape with three-five lobed leaves and a woody vine. The leaves, white and woolly underneath, are a light purple in spring, then olive green in summer, before turning fiery yellow, orange and red in autumn.

Insights
Small, insignificant, slightly fragrant flowers are borne in summer followed by clusters of purple fruits in autumn. This display looks most striking when grown around an established tree or up a wall. It is a recipient of the RHS AGM (Award of Garden Merit), for all round excellence.

Care
- Fruits are inedible
- May require trellis or wire support to start it off when growing up a wall or fence.
- Does not require much maintenance after the first year– keep watered well especially if growing up an established tree as the soil at the base of trees can be quite dry. As a vigorous climber it needs a large vertical space to climb.
