As a member of the sage family, it is no surprise that the leaves of Salvia greggi Royal Bumble emit a lovely fragrance if crushed. It is however the delightfully hot, red flowers, held aloft on deep purple/green stalks that attract attention, illuminating an herbaceous border and attracting a mass of native pollinators and bees to the nectar rich blooms.

Insights
Pliny the Elder, the renowned Roman naturalist and statesman, was the first to describe Salvias, the name coming from the Latin meaning whole and healthy. They are a successful species found across Europe and South America. A recipient of the RHS AGM (Award of Garden Merit), for all round excellence in the garden.

Care
Cut down flower stalks as they fade to encourage more blooms. The foliage will die down in autumn, as it reappears in spring apply a mulch. Protect from frosts in the winter.
