Tradescantia is named after John Tradescant who was thought to have brought the plant with him from Virginia in the 1620s. He was a gardener to Charles I and his collection of curiosities gathered from his travels as a plantsman was eventually acquired by Ashmole, who later founded the Ashmolean in Oxford based on this collection.
The extraordinarily blue flowers will bloom from June to September
