Features

notes
In summer, amidst the dense, strap-like foliage of this originally North American plant, appear the most unusual three-petalled flowers, which respond to the sun by closing if it is too hot and dry. When open (normal in Britain), these remarkably deep blue flowers reveal bright yellow stamens, glorious against the petals.
Insights

Tradescantia is named after John Tradescant who was thought to have brought the plant with him from Virginia in the 1620s. He was a gardener to Charles I and his collection of curiosities gathered from his travels as a plantsman was eventually acquired by Ashmole, who later founded the Ashmolean in Oxford based on this collection.
