Features

notes
A new variety of a much loved perennial, and stalwart of the cottage garden, Astrantia major Star of Passion, is a clump forming deciduous plant with handsome deeply cut foliage. From late spring, well into summer, pincushion-like umbels of starry flowers enclosed in deep maroon bracts are held high above the foliage on strong, fine stems.
Insights

Native to Europe and the Caucasus, the name astrantia comes from the Greek word for star - astra - referring to the tiny star-like flowers. Wonderful for a cutting garden, the long-lasting flowers can also be dried but always leave some in situ since they are marvellous for native pollinators.

Details

The long-lasting flowers appear in May and will continue for several months.

Planting
  • Well drained soil
  • South, west facing
  • Full sun
Care

Minimum maintenance is required, cut flowers once spent to encourage leaf growth; the foliage will die down in the autumn.
