Pulmonaria is native to most of Europe except Britain, where it was introduced in the late 16th century. Pulmonaria officinalis was used as a treatment for chest conditions, explaining its names (the latin word for lung is pulmonis). In the North of England it was called Soldiers and Sailors, as the red and blue flowers on the same stalk recalled their uniforms.

Some of the foliage will die back in the autumn to emerge in the spring. Remove any dead leaves after flowering. Prevent from drying out, this variety is good for mildew resistance, common in Pulmonaria, but if it becomes too dry and suffers, cut back affected foliage and feed, it will bounce back.
