Thixendale
Working in impressionistic swathes of colour, Berkin condenses the landscape within ‘Thixendale’ into abstracted blocks. The valley in the foreground and middle ground encourages our gaze to study deep within the painting, where we can spot the distant farm whose horizon fades into the lilac sky.

Inspired by Cezanne’s quote; “The painter gives concrete expression to his sensations, his perceptions, by means of line and colour”, Berkin is a figurative artist working with the principle that drawing builds a foundation for a successful painting. In the artist’s words, colour should be used to enhance the organisation and definition of observed space and form.
With a background in science, Berkin is particularly interested in visual perception; understanding how our brains translate the information before us when painting from life, and the subsequent observations one makes of this representation.
