Insights

Johann David Wyss (1743–1818) was a Swiss clergyman who loved spending time in the countryside and was deeply involved in raising his four sons. To entertain them and teach them morality, he started telling them stories about a family just like theirs (basing the four son characters on his own boys) who had been shipwrecked on a tropical island. His handwritten manuscript was 800 pages long and many years later, one of his sons found the book, edited it and published it in 1812-13 as ‘The Swiss Family Robinson’.
