notes

The rural community of Avonlea is forever changed by the arrival of the eleven-year-old orphan Anne into the home of brother and sister Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a girl instead of the boy they had sent for. Intelligent, hot-headed as her own red hair, unwilling to take a moral truth as read until she works it out for herself, she must also face grief and loss and learn the true meaning of love.

Insights

Few writers can claim to have had a first novel more successful than the Canadian writer Lucy Montgomery (1874 - 1942) with 'Anne of Green Gables'. It sold over one million copies during her lifetime and has been in print ever since. First published in 1908, it was followed by ‘Anne of Avonlea’ in 1909.
