Also known as 'The Nonesuch Shakespeare', this is a renowned and much coveted twentieth-century edition that marries authoritative scholarship with fine press craftsmanship, embodying the Nonesuch Press’s enduring belief that great literature deserves beautiful books.

Insights

Edited by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch and John Dover Wilson, the edition presents Shakespeare’s plays and poems with clarity and scholarly rigour, but it is the physical books that truly captivate. Its seven volumes are uniformly bound in full tan niger Morocco leather with spines lettered in gilt between raised bands. The paper quality is exquisite and typical of Nonesuch books of this period. It is set in Monotype Fournier with new capital letters cut specifically for this edition on fine cream stock. The overall balance and clarity on the page are outstanding.

  • Medium Octavo.
  • Full tan niger morroco binding (with usual minor variations in hue).
  • Spines lettered in gilt with raised bands.
  • Fine gilt border decoration to front and back of each volume.
  • Top edges red/brown beneath gilt on the rough, all other edges untrimmed.
  • Spines a little darkened (as is typical) with slight rubbing to the base of vols I, II & IV.
  • Small chip to the front base of vol I, some slight grazing to the rear base of vols II & III and some faint markings to the leather typical of a book of this age and type.
  • Internally robust and near fine throughout. Overall, very good.
