Rheum × hybridum Timperley Early is simply the best variety for forcing, to produce the most tender stalks of fragrant, champagne-pink rhubarb. A versatile plant, the stalks are tartly sweet and can be stewed or baked into pies and crumbles, or combined with ginger for jam or wine. Native to China, rhubarb was originally grown for its medicinal value.

Green parts are toxic if ingested. Force mature plants only, on alternate years, by preventing light reaching the crown. The stalks can be harvested eight weeks later; if left unforced it will be ready to harvest from March onwards.
