notes

Colloquially known as the Pickwick Papers, this was Dicken's first full length work and was originally serialised in 19 installments. Dicken's introduced the character Sam Weller in the fourth episode which became the spark for the tale's success. The publication became a phenomenon with bootleg editions and spin-offs including a Sam Weller Joke Book appearing alongside the serialisation - much to Dickens' frustration. Nevertheless, it was Pickwick's success, fame and notoriety that launched Charles Dickens on to the world. This edition, showing its considerable age a little, is true piece of our literary heritage.

Insights

Charles Dickens, a man of prodigious talent, was born in 1812 and rose from modest beginnings to become the most celebrated novelist of his age. With a sharp eye for the plight of the poor, he famously penned works such as Oliver Twist and A Christmas Carol, blending wit with social commentary. Though lauded in his lifetime, he laboured tirelessly, ever striving to entertain and reform in equal measure.
