notes

Popular since Victorian times, Phalaris arundinacea picta is an attractive evergreen grass with distinctive white and pale green stripes up its narrow leaves, befitting its other name of bride’s laces! Clump forming, it tolerates a number of soil conditions but thrives in boggy soil. In early summer it bears pale green flower panicles.

Insights

It’s a vigorous plant that spreads quickly, so may need to be kept under control. Grown around the edge of a pond or water garden, it can assist with preventing soil erosion.
