Hard to pronounce Kniphofia (‘nif-of-e-a’), is one of the first flowers many children recognise, but by its common name - Red Hot Poker. A distant relation of the giant plant named after the late eighteenth-century German botanist Johan Kniphof, this variety evokes the heat and drama of its native South Africa.
The distinctive flower heads appear from March to November.

Dead head as the flowers fade. Leave foliage in place throughout winter to protect from heavy frost. Tidy foliage in mid-spring and check for slugs and snails.
