Holly has a long history in Britain, the Druids (learned members of the Celtic population in Ancient Britain), regarded it as a symbol of fertility and eternal life, and ascribed it magical powers. A hardy, native plant, Holly berries provide a welcome feast in late winter for song thrushes, blackbirds, fieldfares and redwings.
Flowers: In the spring this native Holly produces insignificant self-fertilising white flowers which will lead to copious red berries from autumn onwards
