Features

notes

The beautifully heart shaped leaves of this Hosta Blue Ivory end in a pronounced point and boast a marvellously quilted surface along the lines of the veins. The colour of the foliage is an eye-catching blue, contrasting against an ivory white margin. This acts as a perfect foil for the summer star-like flowers, which are pale lilac in colour. Hostas are particularly good at introducing drama in a shady corner.

Insights

Hostas are native to the far east but were introduced to Europe in the 1800s and became instantly popular. They are spectacular when planted alongside other shade loving plants such as heuchera, dicentra or ferns.

Details
  • Flowers: July - August
  • Hardy
Planting
  • Moist, well-drained soil
  • North, east facing
  • Partial shade
  • Sheltered
Care
  • In slug prone areas, plant in a container raised on gravel and water, otherwise in a dappled border. Deadhead spent flowers and removed foliage as it dies back in the autumn.
  • Shelter from cold winds. Water once or twice a week around the base of the plant, avoiding the leaves. Little and often is not helpful as it encourages the plant to produce roots closer to the surface searching for moisture.
