The druids believed holly was a symbol of eternal life, while the Romans used it to celebrate Saturnalia and brought it to England. Christianity connects the spiky leaves of the plant with the crown of thorns worn by Jesus, with the red berries denoting drops of his blood. It. has also been known as the ‘holy tree’.
