Cosmos atrosanguineus has velvety bronze flowers that are attractive to butterflies and bees. Cosmos are excellent for cutting and ideal for beds, borders and especially containers, where the blue-green lance-like foliage, not to mention its chocolate scent, are striking.

A half-hardy perennial that may not need staking. Great for growing in a sunny border, especially when planted with other hot colours.

After the foliage has died back, reduce the stems to 5cm. Lift, and lay in a tray of soil or compost and overwinter in a frost-free environment. Replant in early spring.
