notes

This compact, deciduous Japanese Quince, Chaenomeles speciosa Rubra, is a spreading shrub, with spiny branches bearing glossy, ovate leaves. In the late winter to early spring, it produces pretty, cup-shaped, five-petalled flowers. The aromatic green-yellow fruit that follows in late summer is traditionally used to make preserves and jellies.

Insights

Rubra is ideal for a small garden and the flowering stems make dramatic, indoor flower arrangements characteristic of ikebana (Japanese flower arrangements). The flowers attract pollinating insects at a crucially early point.
