notes

Cercis Forest Pansy is a large, deciduous shrub known for its bravura foliage. Large, heart-shaped leaves begin the summer a deep purple and as they mature turn to red, orange, bronze and then yellow before falling in autumn. The chameleon leaves are preceded by small, pretty, pink flowers which emerge in clusters along the bare stems and produce distinctive pods. A recipient of the RHS AGM (Award of Garden Merit), for all round excellence in the garden.

Insights

The name Cercis comes from the Greek word Kerkis referring to the shuttle used by weavers, which is the same shape as the seed pods produced by the Cercis. It is sensible to place this shrub at the back of the border due to its size but it is worth considering how beautiful the leaves are if backlit by the sun.
