Cercis canadensis Carolina Sweetheart
This lovely redbud is the most beautiful specimen tree for the garden. Small in habit with an umbrella shape, the deciduous foliage unfurls in dark maroon before becoming green with a white margin. This variegated appearance is most appealing, made more so by the heart shaped leaves. In spring it bears pretty, dark pink pea-like flowers, held on bare stems before the leaves appear.

The flowers are most attractive to bees and other pollinators, so it is an ideal wildlife friendly addition for a small garden or courtyard. A native of America, Redbuds were introduced to Europe in 1730s, however, this cultivar was bred much later in California.
