The Cardoon, also known as the artichoke thistle, is a tall, sun loving perennial that produces handsome foliage and statuesque stems bearing large, purple, thistle-like flowers in high summer. These decorative flowers also work well in flower arrangements.

The Cardoon, also known as the artichoke thistle, is a tall, sun loving perennial that produces handsome foliage and statuesque stems bearing large, purple, thistle-like flowers in high summer. These decorative flowers also work well in flower arrangements.
Harvest the buds before they come into flower, and they can be eaten in the same manner as artichokes. The stems, however, are also a delicacy (appreciated especially in the Victorian era) and can be steamed or fried.

Grown in peat free compost in a biodegradable pot made from waste coir and natural latex. Pop the discarded coir pot in the green bin, leave out for birds to use for nesting, use as mulch or add to compost heap.
