Native to Eastern Brazil, Calatheas can be found on the tropical rainforest floor where little light trickles through the heavy canopy. At night, the leaves fold and lower, then rise and spread out during the day. This habit lends the Calathea its alternate name, Prayer Plant, due to its opening and closing motion, which in turn maximises light absorption.
