notes

Anemone hupehensis Pretty Lady Emily is an extremely easy to care for Japanese Anemone which brings its wonderful rich colour  - bright pink double petals with golden stamens - to the late summer herbaceous border. Valued because it requires little attention, it is also pleasingly compact so is not badly mannered to companion species in the border!

Insights

The hupehensis in the name of this Japanese Anemone refers to the fact that it, or its close relation, was originally found in woodland areas of Hupeh province in central China, north of the Yangtze River. With an exotic heritage, this Anemone was bred in Japan by the renowned Anemone breeder Yoshihiro Kanazawa.

Details

Brilliant flowers appear in mid- to late summer, which are wonderful for arrangements but offer food for late pollinators such as bumblebees and seed in the autumn for birds, so try not to cut them all!

Planting
  • Well drained moist, fertile soil
  • All aspect
  • Partial shade
Care

Low maintenance, so this plant needs little attention beyond ensuring that the roots are never waterlogged. Mulch in early spring.
