notes
With compositions that renders the delicacy of a single stem, or a bustling, crowded field of wildflowers, leaves, and grasses, each piece of Rachel Dein’s work collectively tracks and heralds the progress of the seasons. Each plaque in this collection is an ode to nostalgic moments spent in the Burford Farmhouse garden, the result of an exciting collaboration between the artist and our Creative Director, Louise Johnson.
Insights

Deeming her method as ‘deceptively simple’, Dein arranges all manner of flora and fauna onto a measured slab of wet clay, before pressing them in. Upon the plants leaving their impressions, a wooden frame is placed on the clay and the plaster is poured in and allowed to set. The clay is then peeled away, and the plaster cast is pushed out of its frame. Most of the surface clay is then cleansed away, leaving highly effective traces to enhance its slew of fascinating details.

Artist

Dein began her now famed process back in 2011, aptly naming her technique ‘botanical-bas relief’, a process that has become increasingly popular over the years with artists and students around the world.
