Acer Shaina
With a delicate touch, the serrated, deeply lobed leaves of Acer palmatum Shaina add ravishing colour to the garden because this Japanese Maple functions as a seasonal chameleon. In spring, the leaves are bright red, maturing in summer to deep purple, then back to crimson in autumn. In winter the superb, slightly columnar structure of the tree is revealed.
- Pot size: approx. 3L

This modern variety has been bred to retain all the beauty of a traditional Acer, but with more resilience, so it is winter hardy and will tolerate full sun. It is superb all year as once the leaves have dropped, the bare branches take on a new life once threaded with fairy lights.
Acers produce insignificant flowers in the spring which develop into attractively winged seed pods
- Moist, well drained, slightly acidic soil
- Container
- Full sun, partial shade
- South, east, west facing
- Hardy
- Sheltered
Acers need sunlight but planting them in a sheltered, partially sunny position will heighten the colour. The preference for a slightly acidic soil can indicate container planting. Do not allow them to dry out; water in summer especially if planted in a container. Too exposed or too dry and the leaves may scorch. Prune lightly in November if necessary.
