Originally serialised starting in 1850, the completed books with illustrations began to be published shortly afterwards. A labour of love for the Reverend, he amended and expanded the work throughout much of his life, with this particular edition being notable for the quantity and quality of the illustrations, coloured by hand. - One or two light spots, three pages loose towards the end of vol. 5 & 6, another plate loose in vol. 6.
- Original cloth gilt. Spine ends a little tatty, edges rubbed but typical for age. Some light fading and staining to covers, but otherwise sound.
