When speaking about the inspiration for this piece, Stolz has said: 'Like the Mona Lisa, sheep are often seen as placid and serene creatures, embodying a calm and gentle demeanour. This parallel between the sheep’s tranquillity and the enigmatic calmness of the Mona Lisa adds a layer of meaning to the sculpture, inviting viewers to reflect on the quiet strength and peacefulness that both the animal and the iconic portrait convey.'
Maísa Stolz is a South American artist living in Oxfordshire who creates work that celebrate the intricate beauty of the natural world. With degrees in Fashion Design, Sculpture and Art Education, she has honed her skills as a mixed-media artist, drawing inspiration from her lifelong fascination with the shapes and behaviour of animals—a passion sparked by her childhood in the Brazilian Countryside. Her creations often reimagine famous masterpieces with whimsical animal figures, hybrids, mythological characters and imaginary beings, each piece telling its own story. By blending traditional and contemporary materials such as clay, paper, fabric, horns and feathers, Maísa infuses her art with distinct personalities, grace and humour.
