notes

‘The Summer Book’ is a life affirming story about a six-year-old staying with her artist grandmother for the summer on a tiny island in Finland. They both learn about respect – for the wildlife, for the island and for each other. Tove Jansson captured much of her own life and spirit in the book, which was her favourite of her adult novels. It has never been out of print in Scandinavia and after over 50 years it still holds much resonance today.
