notes

This large, evergreen, climbing clematis bears glossy green leaves year-round, tinted with bronze in winter. From December to February, it bears bell shaped, scented cream flowers, heavily speckled with red inside, which are followed by silky seedheads. Position in a sheltered, sunny spot and consider protecting the plant during a particularly cold spell of weather. Clematis cirrhosa var. purpurascens 'Freckles' is a recipient of the RHS AGM (Award of Garden Merit), for all round excellence.

Insights

As the flowers are bell shaped, the optimum way to enjoy their speckled interior of the flowers is to grow this clematis over an arbour or sunny pergola, so that they are more visible.

Care

Clematis like full sun or partial shade and moist, but well-drained soil with their roots in the shade. For this, plant the crown 5-8cm (2-3in) beneath the soil, ideally shaded by other plants. Alternatively layer stones on the surface of the soil, which protects the roots from the sun and from drying out.

Pruning group 1 – does not require routine pruning.
