Traditionally a mainstay of the Women’s Institute, piccalilli is a British interpretation of South Asian pickles. The word piccalilli is traced by the Oxford English Dictionary back to 1758, when cookery writer of the time Hannah Glasse described how “to make Paco-Lilla, or India Pickle”.
