Old seeds can be ploughed in as green manure- wonderful for adding nitrogen to the soil.

- Do not plant in waterlogged or frozen soil
- Plant seeds in well-watered and finely prepared soil where they will crop. Plant at 5cm (2in) depth, approximately 25cm (9in) apart.
- Seedlings will appear in 2-3 weeks, water well until plants are established.
- Support with canes or twigs as plants mature.
- Pinch off the tips of the shoots (once pods start forming) to delay black bean aphid infestation and improve yield of beans
- For the sweetest beans pick pods while they are still small
Fragrant flowers – nectar is so prolific and popular that some bees will bite holes in the flower base to get to the nectar
