A Blooming Tribute: Creating our Chelsea Inspired Floral Installation
In a dazzling ode to the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show, we unveiled a stunning floral installation to capture the spirit of the event, combined with our ethos of embracing nature’s elegance. A riot of spring colour, the display stood as a testament to the season's most beautiful flowers, inspired by the fine floral exhibits we saw at Chelsea 2024. Join us as we look at the technical tips and tricks we used to create this eye-catching display.
The inclusion of tall grasses and foliage softens the view, whilst a prism of verdant greens, punctuated by vibrant spring hues have been chosen to emulate natural scene. Meanwhile, trees provide architectural height, forming a natural canopy.
Adding structure and dynamism to the space is a vintage blue truck, with a plethora of blooms and foliage brimming from its bonnet and cargo bed. Contemplative seating areas invite visitors to pause, offering pockets of interesting textures and colours, whilst an overarching parasol creates further height.
We love getting out and exploring what nature has to offer, and we have been able to incorporate many foraged finds into this display. However, responsible foraging is key, and with it the consideration of the environment, ensuring that no endangered or rare species are disturbed. When foraging, do take only what is needed, leaving behind more than you take, for wildlife and other admirers. Clean cuts with sharp blades are recommended to avoid damaging plants, with the added reminder to always seek permission before gathering. Be certain of what you are picking and wear protective gloves, always being mindful to not pick poisonous species.
The installation also showcases the art of conditioning cut flowers, ensuring their longevity and vibrancy. Key steps include stripping leaves from the lower parts of stems, making clean, angled cuts, and allowing flowers to drink in cool water (preferably overnight) prior to being displayed. This careful preparation is exemplified by the delicate cow parsley which, when properly conditioned, will stand tall and graceful in any arrangement. Also, with sustainability always in our minds, we have chosen not to use traditional floral foam in favour of eco-friendly alternatives.
