notes

Raymond Evison’s Clematis Empress Evipo011 offers great interest to the garden, with its flamboyant double flower heads. Each flower has pink petals with a darker central line, which surround a pom pom of spiky looking stamens which resemble a dahlia flower! As the flowers fade and the petals fall, these stamens are left on the plant against the glossy foliage. Flowering comes in late spring and often again in September, so enjoy this clematis in a container or trained through a free-standing shrub or trellis, where its colour and texture can be fully appreciated.

Insights

The large flowering clematis require a good quality soil, high in nutrients. It is advisable to dig well-rotted manure or garden compost in before planting (under the roots so that they grow down, rather than apply around the root).

Details

Flowers: May - June and September

Planting
  • Moist, well-drained soil
  • South, East and West aspects
  • Full sun or partial sunlight
Care
  • As Clematis like cool roots, try to position so that the roots will be shaded from the sun by another plant. Bear in mind the space they will need to climb and provide a suitable structure - trellis, wall, fence or other plant - to climb through
  • Remove flowers after first flowering to promote a second flowering in late summer
  • Be prepared to wait a couple of years for the clematis to be at its best
  • Can be a skin irritant and harmful to pets if ingested
  • Group Raymond Evison for pruning
